But wherever it is, it will likely bring more depth and wonder to the already incredible, realized world of Eora. The masters of academic magic, wizards are students of arcane traditions that stretch back beyond the boundaries of recorded history. At the moment, it can only be speculated where or even when Avowed will be set in the world, with theories pointing to Aedyr or one of its territories being the next setting. There is still very little info on most other continents and regions around the world, and it’s only the Eastern Reach and the Deadfire Archipelagos that are explored in the Pillars of Eternity series. But whether or not this can be done without risking the Wheel and all life on Eora remains to be seen. Even some among the gods’ own ranks, Eothas chief among them, desire to end the pantheon’s rule and leave the fate of mortals in their own hands. In recent years, however, more and more kith have been coming closer to the truth. One of the most recent and infamous being the Hollowborn Crisis in the Dyrwood. To this end, the Leaden Key leader, Thaos ix Arkannon, would make it his mission to keep kith from conducting their own research into animancy, mainly by blaming the practice for various tragedies and crises they caused throughout history. The surviving Engwithans then formed an organization called the Leaden Key to spread this new faith across Eora and ensure that the truth about these gods would never be revealed. Sacrificing most of their civilization, they crafted each deity with an ideal to give kith multiple meanings to choose from in life and prevent future nations and peoples from waging wars based on false gods. It turns out that the gods themselves were once Engwithans, who ascended to godhood through their mastery of animancy. Notable exceptions include both the Dyrwood and the Vailian Republics.Īs players will soon discover, the gods have many secrets that they don’t want kith to find out and will go to any lengths to keep it that way. The practice is controversial and has been banned throughout most of the known world for associations with necromancy. Little is known about this long-lost empire, but it’s clear from the ruins that they mastered science, mathematics, arcane study and most of all, animancy, or soul/essence manipulation. There used to be a third moon that orbited Eora, but it was destroyed due to actions by some of the gods.Ī common mystery found through most of Eora are the ruins of an ancient, advanced civilization that existed millennia ago, known as the Engwithans. Unlike our own world, Eora also has two moons that orbit the planet and affect the tides, sometimes in erratic and unpredictable ways. Governments of these new nations are also slowly transitioning to be more democratic. While still powerful, these empires have either fallen or are in steady decline due to internal conflicts, feuds between nobles, uprisings and the loss of their colonies. These old empires consist of Aedyr, Old Valia and Rauatai.

The world consists of various continents and island archipelagos, the oldest of which are ruled by empires that have existed for hundreds or even thousands of years. The history of Eora goes back thousands of years, with countless heroes, empires and even gods rising and falling, only to be replaced by what comes after. As creators of the original Fallout games and The Outer Worlds, Obsidian has a penchant for creating engrossing worlds that are rich in story, characters and lore, and the world of Eora is no exception. Eora is the fantasy setting for the Pillars of Eternity series, as well as the upcoming spinoff title Avowed, both of which were created by Obsidian Entertainment.
