They will occasionally, in this condition, like the buffalo, charge an elephant with their eyes closed, and inflict severe wounds. If left unmolested they are, usually speaking, harmless, but when wounded, dangerous, especially to a sportsman on foot. On average, females are about 2.4 m (7.9 ft) at the shoulder and 2.7 t (3.0 short tons) in weight. Asian elephants are the largest living land animals in Asia. Three subspecies are recognized - Elephas maximus maximus from Sri Lanka, the Indian elephant or E. The Asian or Asiatic elephant ( Elephas maximus) is the only living species of the genus Elephas and distributed in Southeast Asia from India in the west to Borneo in the east. The nasal horn is slightly back-curved with a base of about 18.5 cm (7.3 in) by 12 cm (4.7 in) that rapidly narrows until a smooth, even stem part begins about 55 mm (2.2 in) above base.
In most adults, the horn reaches a length of about 25 cm (9.8 in), but has been recorded up to 57.2 cm (22.5 in) in length. The black horn, like human fingernails, is pure keratin and starts to show after about 6 years. The Rhino's single horn is present in both males and females, but not on newborn young. The largest sized specimens can range up to 4,000 kg (8,800 lb). The skull is heavy with a basal length above 60 cm (24 in) and an occiput above 19 cm (7.5 in). Females range in height from 147 to 173 cm (4.82 to 5.68 ft) and weigh about 1,600 kg (3,500 lb). The Indian rhinoceros is a heavily built species with an average head and body length of 412 cm (162 in) and an average girth of 396 cm (156 in). Listed as a vulnerable species, the large mammal is primarily found in parts of north-eastern India and in protected areas in the Terai of Nepal, where populations are confined to the riverine grasslands in the foothills of the Himalayas.
